SAY WHAAAAAAAT?!?:
"He spoke what a lot of people feel." - Diddy on Kanye West's George W. Bush remarks Sept 2nd.
IMPORTANT UPDATE: Due to the nature of the recent George W. Bush incident, I've transferred that subject into its own blog here.
Latest Kanye West Music News:
LATEST NEWS: Kanye was nominated for eight Grammy awards including two in the big categories: album of the year for Late Registration and song of the year for the #1 soulful hip-hop ditty "Gold Digger". Although he did not win in those two major categories, he did claim three Grammies: best rap album, best rap song ("Diamonds of Sierra Leone"), and best rap solo performance ("Digger").
Notable bio and bits
Born Kanye Omari West on 7-8-05 in Atlanta, GA.
Nominated for 10 Grammy Awards in 2005 for his album The College Dropout. He won three awards: Best Rap Song "Jesus Walks", Best Rap Album: The College Dropout, and Best R&B Song "You Don't Know My Name" by Alicia Keys sharing the award with Keys and Harold Lilly.
As you probably know from watching episodes of So You Think You Can Dance (Fox) chicago is not exactly a hip-hop heartland.
But that is the area that produced one of the few such artists of the day to mix credibility with commercialism, not to mention charisma and controversy, Kanye West.
So what is Kanye's deal? Kanye is not a gangsta rapper. Kanye West music is not gangsta. Yet he is the first artist since Public Enemy to make aware of the shortcomings, and upcomings of African-Americans non-gangsta style.
He made us extremely aware to the point that in 2004, when The College Dropout dropped in stores, he didn't have to reach out more than we, the audience reached out for him.
How can one pull this off? I'm not sure what route would best fit you, but he did it with:
Lyrics resembling more of a witty conversationalist rather than a poet.
More use of lyrical music samples than from a typical hip-hop music mixer, i.e., having a sample of continuous singing in the background with Kanye rapping on the "main" track simultaneously. Hear "Never Let Me Down" for an example.
A raw mix of orchestral jazz samples, that sound trip-hoppy, even acid-jazz like. AND:
Don't forget, he firmly stamped his own precence as a sought-after producer. He had already experienced tremendous success in that category producing tracks for many hip-hop phenomenons circa Jay-Z and Ludacris.
The boost that helped transform West from such an in-demand producer to a public icon happened in 2004 when two songs, "Through The Wire" and "Slow Jamz", from his debut, The College Dropout saturated every promotion outlet, radio, T.V., etc., that those songs could possibly be found on.
So, the long and short of Kanye West's profile? To me, he is the political P-Diddy. I mean he almost looks like him. He almost talks like him. His ettique and wit for rapping and producing are also right up there with Diddy.
Just take some street-smart lyrics dealing with the need to stay away from controversial ladies, replace them with other controversial subjects (socioeconomics and politics), and inspirational subjects (such as Jesus) and you definitely got a more-than-noteworthy product very pleasing to the hip-hop senses: Kanye West music.
