Q: How do I choose which music downloads service to pick?

Q: I’d like to download these and other Mariah Carey music, but I don’t wish to pay for them. Or at least I wish to get them for very cheap. How can I do this without breaking the law?

Background

It has been almost exactly 15 years since she made her debut with "Vision of Love". The best-selling female performer of the 1990s, Mariah Carey rose to superstardom on the strength of her stunning five-octave voice; an elastic talent who moved easily from glossy ballads to hip-hop-inspired dance-pop, she earned frequent comparison to rivals Whitney Houston and Celine Dion, but did them both one better by composing all of her own material.

Born in Long Island, NY, on March 27, 1970, Carey moved to New York City at the age of 17 -- just one day after graduating high school -- to pursue a music career; there she befriended keyboardist Ben Margulies, with whom she began writing songs. The early beginnings of Mariah Carey music!

Her big break came as a backing vocalist on a studio session with dance-pop singer Brenda K. Starr, who handed Carey's demo tape to Columbia Records head Tommy Mottola at a party. According to legend, Mottola listened to the tape in his limo while driving home that same evening, and was so immediately struck by Carey's talent that he doubled back to the party to track her down.

After signing to Columbia, Carey entered the studio to begin work on her 1990 self-titled debut LP; the heavily promoted album was a chart-topping smash, launching no less than four number one singles: "Vision of Love," "Love Takes Time," "Someday," and "I Don't Wanna Cry." Mariah Carey music in full effect.

Her overnight success earned Grammy awards as Best New Artist and Best Female Vocalist, and expectations were high for Carey's follow-up, 1991's Emotions. The album did not disappoint, as the title track reached number one -- a record fifth consecutive chart-topper -- while both "Can't Let Go" and "Make It Happen" landed in the Top Five.

Carey's next release was 1992's MTV Unplugged EP, which generated a number-one cover of the Jackson 5's "I'll Be There"; featured on the track was backup singer Trey Lorenz, whose appearance immediately helped him land a recording contract of his own.

In June 1993, Carey wed Mottola -- some two decades her senior -- in a headline-grabbing ceremony; months later she released her third full-length effort, Music Box, her best-selling record to date. Two more singles, "Dreamlover" and "Hero," reached the top spot on the charts.

With fans wanting more than Mariah Carey music, Carey's first tour followed and was widely panned by critics; undaunted, she resurfaced in 1994 with a holiday release titled Merry Christmas, scoring a seasonal smash with "All I Want for Christmas Is You." 1995's Daydream reflected a new artistic maturity; the first single, "Fantasy," debuted at number one, making Carey the first female artist and just the second performer ever to accomplish the feat.

The follow-up, "One Sweet Day" -- a collaboration with Boyz II Men -- repeated the trick, and remained lodged at the top of the charts for a record 16 weeks. Considered the biggest hit for Boyz II Men or Mariah Carey music.

After separating from Mottola, Carey returned in 1997 with Butterfly, another staggering success and her most hip-hop-flavored recording to date. #1's -- a collection featuring her 13 previous chart-topping Mariah Carey music singles as well as "The Prince of Egypt (When You Believe)," a duet with Whitney Houston effectively pairing the two most successful female recording artists in pop history -- followed late the next year.

With "Heartbreaker," the first single from her 1999 album Rainbow, Carey became the first artist to top the charts in each year of the 1990s; the record also pushed her ahead of the Beatles as the artist with the most cumulative weeks spent atop the Hot 100 singles chart.

However, the 2000s weren't as kind to Carey. After signing an 80 million dollar deal with Virgin -- the biggest record contract ever -- in 2001 she experienced a very public personal and professional meltdown that included rambling, suicidal messages on her website; an appearance on TRL where, clad only in a T-shirt, she handed out Popsicles to the audience; and last but not least, the stupendously awful movie Glitter and its attendant soundtrack (which was also her Virgin Records debut). Both the film and the album did poorly critically as well as commercially, with Glitter making just under 4 million dollars in its total U.S. gross and the soundtrack struggling to make gold sales. Could that be end of Mariah Carey music, etc.?

Following these failures, Virgin and Carey parted ways early in 2002, with the label paying her 28 million dollars. That spring, she found a new home with Island/Def Jam, where she set up her own label, MonarC Music. In December, she released her ninth album, Charmbracelet, which failed to become a success.

Although she took nearly three years for a follow-up, Carey found a hit with 2005's The Emancipation of Mimi, her most successful record in years. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

1. Mariah Carey (1990)
Mariah Carey Music:
1.1 Vision of Love (1990)
- her very first hit - at the tender age of 19.- reached the U.S. Top 40 on 6-16-90. Went to #1 on 8-04-90 where it spent 4 weeks at #1.- The songs begins with a freely, haunting, seducious opening, where she shows of her tenor, then baritone range.- Then, the song switches to 6/8 time. The main part of the song is what I would describe as an optimistic, sensual contemporary blues ballad. There is a bridge which is more mainstream than the main portion. - On the final chorus she shows off her highest range, just before the song fades.

1.2 Love Takes Time (1990)
- a HUGE song. Spent three weeks on top of charts in November 1990.- This song is definitely less adventurous than Vision of Love. - It would be best described as a very well-written contemporary ballad. - As the song goes on, she struts off her vocal stuff, especially in the choruses.

1.3 Someday (1991)
- Her first uptempo hit. And her third #1 in a row. What?? You mean she doesn't just do ballads?- The song is quite progressive and mainstream. The song benefits from its production more than anything. - Several remixes of the song.- Check out the ending! As high as she goes! Even more prominent with the remixes.

1.4 I Don't Wanna Cry (1991)
- Another ballad. Quite distinct overall from the previous two ballads. Although it is both bluesy - like Vision of Love, and comtemporary - like Love Takes Time. - Like Vision of LOve, this song is bluesy and somewhat seductive. It is more contempory, however, than Vision and does not have the optimistic feel to it.- Unlike her first three singles, there is a bridge connecting each of the two verses to the chorus.

2. Emotions (1991)
Mariah Carey Music:
2.1 Emotions (1991)
- She and Columbia Records sure didn't waste any time getting her sophomore release out!- The song became her fifth #1 in a row here in the U.S. This feat has not been done or repeated in history.- This song gave a taste of what to expect with Mariah Carey music of the future - songs based on a main sample.- The sample? Best of My Love - from the group Emotions (#1 in 1977). - Only the verses and chorus are based on the sample. The bridge is quite uptempo, yet relaxing - has a disco melody over an early 1990's uptemp AC rhythm. - We get the extra benefit from her screaching high pitch. At the end of each bridge, just before the chorus!

2.2 Can't Let Go (1991-92)
- First ballad from Emotions. - This sensual ballad has a not-there-yet-but-will-be feel. Musically it has a "major-minor" blend to it.- Unlike the rest of her singles to date (and many following it) it takes a long time to get to the nitty-gritty of the song. I believe this is why this song fell short of hitting #1.- The song did hit #2, however. It would be her lowest peaking song to date, but not for long...

2.3 Make It Happen (1992)
- Final single from Emotions did #5 (I guess it didn't happen)- An uptemo song, and the first song with a general message. Thank goodness it would not be the most successful of that kind. - I felt that it could have benefited from a stronger beat to compete with the rawness of other songs on the chart at the time.

3. MTV Unplugged (1992)
Mariah Carey Music:
3.1 I'll Be There (feat. Trey Lorenz) (1992)
- Her only live single. The song had the fastest climb to the top out of all her songs to that time.- And it's a remake - of another #1 song, from the Jackson 5.

4. Music Box (1993)
Mariah Carey Music:
4.1 Dreamlover (1993)
- Very simple melody - a feel-good midtempo song- Spent eight weeks on top!

4.2 Hero (1993-94)
- An extremely well-written ballad about finding your inner strength. - Unlike several songs from her which seem written to please radio stations, Hero sounds like it was truly written from the heart.- That said, it pleased the stations anyway. Four solid weeks on top during Christmas 1993.- The song was also featured in God Bless America, a 2001 compilation album released after 9/11.

4.3 Without You (1994)

5.1 Endless Love (duet with Luther Vandross) (1994)
- remake of Lionel Richie's and Diana Ross' 1981 #1 smash. This Luther Vandross and Mariah Carey music version hit #2, although sounding less sappy than the original.

6. Daydream (1995)
Mariah Carey Music:
6.1 Fantasy (1995)
- first single off her 4th studio album is another uptempo hit, the only difference that this one has a hip beat to it.- Her second big "sample" song - Emotions was the first, remember?- The sample here: The Tom Tom Club's 1982 hit "Genius of Love", one her favorites back in the day. - Unlike Emotions, the "Genius" sample, or at least it's groove, is present from start to finish.- The great thing about the song is that, while the sample has an obvious prominence, "Fantasy" has a completely different feel than "Genius". "Fantasy" is simply more uplifting by a landslide. - Featured a hip-hop remix - preview of future hits? The late Ol' Dirty Bastard (from Wu Tang Klan) was the guest rapper.

6.2 One Sweet Day (duet with Boyz II Men) (1995-96)
- I find it hard to believe that 43 weeks out of all the weeks that Boyz II Men spent at #1 were from just three songs.- This song spent 16 consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard's Hot 100. The longest of any song in history.- Unlike any of her previous hits, this song has a key change at the last chorus - makes the song even more uplifting.- This 4:40 song is a sensitive, yet optimistic tune about loved ones who have passed away and hope to see again... one sweet day.

6.3 Always Be My Baby (1996)
- until June 2005, this was her final #1 song in the U.S. on radio.- She did have a few more #1's on Billboard, mostly driven by strong bursts of sales.- A semi-acoustic uptempo song, but also quite heartfelt.
